Title: Pansies and Wild Flowers
Artist: Kelly, Hannah Rusk (Elmslie, Ont., 1860 - Hamilton, Ont., 1931)
Date: c. 1920
Medium: Original Watercolour
Note: Hannah Rusk Kelly: A fine late nineteenth and early twentieth century Canadian painter, Hannah Rusk Kelly first studied art under Robert Harris, in Toronto. She then continued her education in Paris, France, at the Academie Colarossi under Courtois, Girardo and Blanc. Her studies were completed at the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia under the great American master, William Merritt Chase.
Hannah Rusk Kelly moved permanently to Hamilton, Ontario in 1890. Her landscapes and portraits were exhibited locally at this time. Beginning around 1900, however, Kelly moved more and more toward the medium of miniature painting, both on ivory and in watercolours. These finely crafted works of art gained for her a national reputation and she began to exhibit them with such major national institutions as the Royal Canadian Academy, the Ontario Society of Artists and the Art Association of Montreal. Her miniatures were also included in the annual art shows of the Canadian National Exhibition and at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition.
Pansies and Wild Flowers is a superb example of Kelly's miniature art. Both detail and the full range of colours and shades are brought forth with the sure hand of a master painter in this demanding medium. This striking still life was probably painted by the artist around 1920.
