What is known is that he etched a number of portraits, landscapes and views in such areas as Cleveland, Cape Cod and New York. It is possible that the artist was born in Cleveland and came to New York to study around 1925. During the 1930's (the final decade of the artist's life), Kaufman was regularly commissioned by the New York Branch of the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) for his art. Today such institutions as the Cleveland Museum of Art and Denison University list impressions of Edwin Kaufman's etchings in their permanent collections.
Edwin Kaufman's New York etchings concentrate mostly upon the city's bridges, harbors and poorer working areas. They provide a valuable historic and artistic record of Manhattan during this era.

He studied under Henry Keller at the Cleveland School of Art and graduated in 1929. Shortly thereafter, Edwin Kaufman moved to Sunnyside, Long Island. In both Cleveland and New York City he worked as a fine artist and as a commercial illustrator. During the Depression, Kaufman created etchings for the New York Branch of the W.P.A. and produced illustrations for various magazines.
