Note: Erika Fluss Kahn 'Erika Kahn': A California painter and printmaker, Erika Kahn experienced the barbarity of the Nazi regime in her youth. Born and raised in Berlin she was banned from her public school at the age of ten and sent to the Theodore Herzl School, an all-Jewish institution. Three years later (1938) she witnessed the destruction of both her synagogue and school. Erika Kahn and her parents managed to escape to New York shortly thereafter. Her grandparents, however, were incarcerated and eventually perished in Auschwitz in 1942.
Erika Kahn began working in New York as a clothing designer at the age of eighteen. She later studied painting and printmaking techniques there at both the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute. When she married and moved with her husband to California, Erika Kahn completed her arts education at California State University, Northridge, (B.A., 1968 and M.A., 1974).
Erika Fluss Kahn first exhibited her fine art in 1967 at the University of California, Los Angeles. Since that time her original prints have been included in exhibitions in New York, Houston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Honolulu, Santa Monica and Santa Barbara. She has participated in international exhibitions in Osaka, Japan, Jerusalem, Israel, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She has also served as an art instructor at both Santa Monica College and the Laguna School of Art and Design.
Today the art of Erika Kahn is included in the following public collections; Portland Museum of Art, Long Beach Museum of Art, Monterey Museum of Art, University of Michigan and the Hawaii State Foundation of Culture & Art.
Las Casitas is both an accomplished and complex work of original printmaking. Designed as a triptych, it covers three large sheets of archival papers. Erika Kahn has employed subtle tones and textures of black, brown and gold. Embossed patterns (blind printing) emerge from the lower, white areas.
