Bela Ivanyi Grunwald

Bela Ivanyi Grunwald - Tajkep gemeskuttal Sweep Pole Well

Tajkep gemeskuttal (Sweep-Pole Well)

Tajkep gemeskuttal(Sweep-Pole Well) is an original drypoint engraving designed by one of Hungary's most esteemed late nineteenth and early twentieth century artists, Bela Ivanyi Grunwald. Ivanyi Grunwald has signed his name in pencil within the lower right margin. Other sources list Tajkep gemeskuttal as being both designed and engraved by Ivanyi Grunwald, but I have some doubt. Within the plate to the lower left another name appears -- "Jub(?)ta sc(ulpsit)". I have also seen an etching of figures which bears both Ivanyi Grunwald's pencil signature and the identical name within the plate.

As Bela Ivanyi Grunwald built his strong reputation with his oil paintings and murals, it's therefore likely that he designed his prints for an assistant or colleague to engrave. In 1925 Ivanyi Grunwald painted a landscape scene bearing the same title. Perhaps this drypoint engraving owes its genesis to this painting.

Title: Tajkep gemeskuttal (Sweep-Pole Well)
Artist: Ivanyi Grunwal, Bela (Somogysom, Hungary, 1867 - Budapest, 1940)
Date: c. 1925
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Note: Bela Ivanyi Grunwald: A major Hungarian painter, Bela Ivanyi Grunwald was a pupil of Bertalan Szekely and Karoly Lotz at the Budapest School of Decorative Art (1882-84). He then concluded his studies at both the Munich Academy, Germany, and the Julien Academie, Paris. His initial paintings show his interest in the Symbolist techniques of Jules Bastien-Lepage. In 1896, however, Ivanyi Grunwald joined the Nagybanya artists' colony and began to concentrate upon 'plein-air' landscape painting.
Bela Ivanyi Grunwald founded the Kecskemet artists' colony in 1911, and remained as the director in Kecskemet until 1918. After 1920 the artist moved to Pest and became a founding member of the Szinyei Merse Pal Society. In 1928 Ivanyi Grunwald became President of the Szentendre Painters' Association.
Ivanyi Grunwald's painting techniques changed considerably during his career. First influenced by French naturalism, he then became interested in the landscape paintings of the Barbizon School. By 1910 Ivanyi Grunwald began exploring the contemporary methods of the Fauves and the Brittany paintings of Paul Gauguin. Finally, beginning around 1920, he painted landscapes emphasizing the changing effects of light and atmosphere in an impressionistic vein. Tajkep gemeskuttal (Sweep-Pole Well) belongs to this final part of his career.
