South West View of Theale Church near Reading in Berkshire

George Hollis's original engraving, "South West View of Theale Church near Reading in Berkshire", dates from 1839. It is based upon a design by the British architect, painter and designer, John Chessel Buckler. Along the lower margin the publisher has dedicated this engraving to The Society of Antiquaries in Oxford. 'Theale' Church is also known as Holy Trinity Church, Theale. This view of Theale Church represents a fine, original example of the architectural art by both George Hollis and John Buckler.

Note: George Hollis: An early nineteenth century architectural engraver, George Hollis studied under George Cooke. Besides producing individual plates such as, "South West View of Theale Church near Reading in Berkshire", Hollis was a contributor to such sets of architectural studies as Hoare's "Wiltshire", Ormerod's "Cheshire" and Warner's "Glastonbury Abbey". George Hollis also published and engraved a series of view of Oxford Colleges. During the final two years of his life George Hollis engraved plates for the "Monumental Effigies of Great Britain". In this final undertaking he was assisted by his son, Thomas Hollis (1818-1843).
  John Chessel Buckler: An architect, painter, designer and publisher, John Chessel Buckler designed his first engravings in 1797. During the following years he concentrated upon views of English cathedrals and of collegiate and abbey churches. Other sets of his views include "Sixty Views of Endowed Grammar Schools" (1827) and "A History of the Architecture of St. Alban's Abbey" (1847). John Buckler was an annual exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1790 until 1840. Examples of his art are housed in the collections of the South Kensington Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
  The publisher has dedicated this engraving entitled, "South West View of Theale Church near Reading in Berkshire", to The Society of Antiquaries in Oxford. 'Theale' Church is also known as Holy Trinity Church, Theale.

Condition: Printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with margins cropped near the plate mark on all sides. Containing slight scuffing and a small tear in the outer margins (well removed from the actual engraving), else a finely printed, early impression and in good condition throughout. "South West View of Theale Church near Reading in Berkshire" (Holy Trinity Church) represents a fine, original example of the architectural art of both George Hollis and John Buckler.
