Utagawa Hirokage: After the death of Ando Hiroshige (1858) his famous landscape art was carried on by his most notable pupils, Shigenobu (Hiroshige II), Shigemasa (Hiroshige III), Hirokage, Fusatane and Sadanobu. Utagawa Hirokage was active in Edo from 1855 to 1865. He first became known for a series of thirty-six views of Mt. Fuji from Edo (now Tokyo). These were made in collaboration with Kunisada, who had also produced woodcut designs in collaboration with Hiroshige. His
most famous set, however, is Edo meisho doke zukushi (Comical Views of Famous Places in Edo). Tatekawa in Honjo (Tatekawa tori kei) hails from this series and is indicative of both its humour and fine craftsmanship. |
|
The series: Edo meisho doke zukushi (Comical Views of Famous Places in Edo) was created by the Japanese artist, Utagawa Hirokage for an an album of eighty woodcuts, consisting of forty six 'Comical Views of Edo', and thirty three 'Prints of Actors'. Tatekawa in Honjo (Tatekawa tori kei), was published by Tsujiokaya Bunsuke in 1859 and is the thirty seventh woodcut in this series. It depicts a humorous accident scene at the lumber yard with a view of the Tatekawa river at Honjo (Edo). To the right, a Japanese worker is on top of a pile of lumber, and he has accidentally dropped wood on another worker below. The series stands out in Japanese art for its satire and humour, particularly of the slapstick variety. Yet, one can see the influence and training of Hirokage's master, the great Hiroshige, in the handling of the boats in the harbour, the bridge and the distant view of Mt. Fuji in the background. Both the Museum of Modern Art, Accession number 11.37144 and the British Museum, Museum Number: 1943,0410,0.7.33 include an impression of this original woodcut in their collections. |
