Georg Daniel Heumann (Georg Heumann)

Georg Daniel Heumann - Jean Rodolphe Ostervald

Jean Rodolphe Ostervald, Pasteur de L'Eglise Francoise de Basle

Georg Daniel Heumann's original portrait engraving of Jean Rodolphe Ostervald is printed on early eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper. It was both designed and engraved by him between 1740 and 1751. This is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the eighteenth century German artist, Georg Heumann.

Jean Rodolphe Ostervald, Pasteur de L'Eglise Francoise de Basle (Pastor of the French Church of Basel) was born September First, 1687. A major Calvinist theologian, Ostervald wrote many books, including Les Devoirs des Communians (1765). His most famous work was undoubtedly his 1744 translation of the Huguenot David Martin Bible -- Le Sainte Bible. For centuries this translation (commonly known as the 'D'Ostervald Bible') provided a strong alternative to the King James version.
