James Drummond Herbert's "Dancer with Raised Skirt -'Can Can'" is original graphite and pen and ink drawing created by the American artist between 1945 and 1950. It is drawn on wove paper and with full margins and signed with Herbert's estate stamp along the lower right corner and titled and documented along the verso. This is a fine original example of the art designed by James Drummond Herbert for National Ballet Company in New York.

Note: James Drummond Herbert : A very well known twentieth century sculptor, painter and artistic director, James Drummond Herbert studied at Columbia University and at the Art Students League, New York, under George Bridgman. James Herbert's artistic education was completed in 1920 when he went to the Julien Academy in Paris to study under Dumond and Lentelli.
  During his career, James Drummond Herbert was equally well received for his sculpture, paintings and drawings. He was a full member of such major societies as the National Arts Club, the Art Students League of New York, the National Society of Illustrators and the National Sculpture Society. James Drummond Herbert exhibited frequently at the prestigious National Academy of Design, Washington, as well as at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Architectural League, New York. Both the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum, New York, include his art in their permanent collections.
  During the 1940's the subject of dance was a major source of inspiration for the artist. Furthermore, in the mid 1940's, the National Ballet Company, New York, commissioned James Drummond Herbert to execute designs and drawings for several performances. This original drawing remained in Herbert's estate until after his death when it was sold by his widow, who provided the estate stamp signature as well as writing the title, "Dancer with Raised Skirt -'Can Can'" and further information on the verso.
