James Duffield Harding (J. D. Harding)

James Duffield Harding - Bergamo Sketches at Home and Abroad

Bergamo (Sketches at Home and Abroad)

James Duffield Harding’s original lithograph, "Bergamo" was printed and published in an edition of 1,000 impressions for the 1836 portfolio, Sketches at Home and Abroad.  Printed by Charles Hullmandel, the large lithographs contained within this set were the first to extensively utilize tint stones and applications of China white. It is printed upon thick wove paper and with large, full margins as published in London in 1836. This impression is titled and dated in the stone to the lower left, "Bergamo, Oct., 8, 1834," and initialed by Harding to the lower right. July, 1827, J. D. H. In this 19th century Italian landscape view, James Harding depicts a street scene on a warm, October day, showing both the upper and lower parts of Bergamo, Italy with its inhabitants and charming old buildings. Bergamo is an Italian city in the Lombardy region, about twenty-five miles north-east of Milan.  As one can see from this fine composition it is actually two cities; Citta Bassa (the lower city) and Citta Alta (the upper city).  Altogether, "Bergamo" is a fine, original example of the Italian landscape art created by the British artist, J. D. Harding.

Note: James Duffield Harding 'J. D. Harding': Among the first generation of England’s great artist-lithographers the name of James Duffield Harding ranks with the best, and, as an innovator and tireless experimenter in the then infant art of lithography, he is second to none. After receiving a handful of lessons in water-colour from Samuel Prout, Harding first distinguished himself in that field, becoming an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colour in 1820 and a full Academician in the following year. His introduction to lithography began in 1820 when he met the lithographic artist and master printer, Charles Joseph Hullmandel. James Harding first contributed some original lithographs to Britannia Delineata and Voyages Pittoresques before launching out with accomplished sets of topographical views executed entirely by his own hand. These include, Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836), Park and Forest (1844) and Scotland Delineated (1852). This original lithograph entitled, "Bergamo" hails from Harding's 1936 set, Sketches at Home and Abroad. The scene depicts a street scene showing both the upper and lower parts of Bergamo.
Almost all of J. D. Harding’s lithographs were printed by the greatest lithographic technician of the day, Charles Joseph Hullmandel (London, 1789-1850). Hullmandel worked closely with England’s greatest lithographic artists, including Samuel Prout, Thomas Shotter Boys, Richard Lane, William Westall and others. In 1821 he collaborated with the fine French artist, Theodore Gericault (1791-1824), on the set, Various Subjects Drawn from Life and on Stone. Charles Hullmandel was the author of A Manual of Lithography (1820), and The Art of Drawing on Stone (1824). Among his influential innovations in the art of lithography are the ‘brush style’ (approximately 1831), the ‘stump style’ and ‘tinted style’ (approximately 1835) and the lithotint process (1841). The ‘stump’ and ‘tinted’ styles were first employed extensively to the lithographs found within Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836).
James Duffield Harding was a full member of the Old Watercolour Society. He exhibited his art in London, from 1811 to 1864, and was an annual exhibitor at the Royal Academy, from 1811 to 1858. He was a lifetime teacher of both lithographic and watercolour techniques, always with an emphasis upon direct observation of nature. Among his most famous pupils was John Ruskin (1819-1900). Today the art of James Harding is included in such major collections as the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Sketches at Home and Abroad: Sketches at Home and Abroad was published as a set of imperial folio size and contained in total fifty-one original plates of single tint lithographs (including the title page), all drawn on the stone by James Harding, such is the case with this original lithograph entitled, "Bergamo". The views included scenes of Britain, France, Monaco, Italy and Germany. Michael Twyman writes, "The original drawings were made over a period from September 1824 to October 1835, but many date from 1834 when J. D. Harding made an extensive continental tour. It is not known when the drawings were put on stone, but presumably some time after October, 1835. They were printed by Hullmandel and published by Charles Tilt in an edition of 1,000 copies, after which the drawings were then effaced from the stones." *
Sketches at Home and Abroad marks a milestone in the history of early lithography. Here, for the first time, tint-stones were extensively employed to create further tonal values. Furthermore, an extra stone was often used to provide accents of China white upon the actual images. Joseph Pennell comments, "In Sketches at Home and Abroad are some of Harding’s finest compositions, which helped to develop tint-work. They are admirable renderings on tinted paper, heightened by Chinese white, printed from a second stone or with the lights scraped or etched out in the tint." **
The lithographs from this meticulously made set gained for James Duffield Harding a strong reputation, both in England and on the continent. In fact, for his work dealing with Sketches at Home and Abroad the artist was presented with a diamond ring from King Louis-Phillipe of France.
Bergamo, Italy: An original lithograph by J. D. Harding, "Bergamo" belongs to perhaps his greatest set of topographical views, Sketches at Home and Abroad, which was completed and published in 1836. In collaboration with the finest lithographic printer of the era, Charles Joseph Hullmandel (London, 1789-1850), the large lithographs contained within this set were the first to extensively utilize tint stones and applications of China white. This impression is titled and dated in the stone to the lower left, "Bergamo, Oct., 8, 1834," and initialed by Harding to the lower right. July, 1827, J. D. H. In this 19th century Italian landscape view, James Harding depicts a street scene on a warm, October day, showing both the upper and lower parts of Bergamo with its inhabitants and charming old buildings. Bergamo also known as Citta dei Mille (City of the Thousand) is an Italian city in the Lombardy region, about twenty-five miles north-east of Milan. As one can see from this fine composition it is actually two cities; Citta Bassa (the lower city) and Citta Alta (the upper city). Today, Citta Bassa is the more modern center of the city, composed of residential neighborhoods, and with a shopping district located on Via 20 "Septembre. Points of interest in the Citta Bassa include the Santa Lucia Church, Museo Bernareggi, the Torre dei Caduiti di Bergamo, the Teatro Donizetti, etc. Bergamo is also home to some of the oldest structures that are of great historical, cultural and architectural interest, situated in the Citta Alta. These include the Museo Civico Archeologico (Archaeological Civic Museum), and the Museo di Scienze Naturali Enrico Caffi (Caffi Natural Science Museum), both housed in the 14th century Cittadella (citadel). Religious edifices, include the 12th century Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, San Michele al Pozzo Bianco, Bergamo Cathedral and other fine churches and chapels. Also of note are Rocca (Castle), the Palazzo della Ragione first erected in the 13th century and rebuild in the 16th century, and the Palazzo Nuovo (Angelo Mai Library) situated at the Piazza Vecchia (old square). Altogether, this original lithograph is a striking example of the Italian landscape art created by the British artist, J. D. Harding.
