Susan Hall - The Carrot Salad

The Carrot Salad

Susan Hall's original lithograph, "The Carrot Salad" is printed upon fine, hand-made, laid paper bearing a 'K' watermark and with large, full margins as printed by Crown Point Press and published by Brooke Alexander in 1973. It is signed, titled, numbered and dated by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. This unique work of art has been hand-coloured with watercolor and then given a specific number, 'AP #10' which means it is the eighth Artist Proof impression. In "The Carrot Salad", Susan Hall cleaverly brings together an assortment of elements to create a striking composition. She depicts a table cloth, a salad and its accessories which occupy the lower portion of the image while scenes of racing greyhounds dominate the upper portion. This is a fine, original example of the art created by the American artist, Susan Hall.

Title: The Carrot Salad
Artist: Hall, Susan (Point Reyes Station, California, Born, 1943)
Date: 1973
Publisher: Brooke Alexander
Printer: Crown Point Press
Medium: Original Hand Colored Etching
Note: Susan Hall: A contemporary painter and etcher, Susan Hall studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, (B.F.A., 1965) and at the University of California, Berkley (M.A., 1967). Her first solo exhibition took place in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1967. Since that time her art has been included in major exhibitions in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Santa Barbara and Indianapolis.
From 1981 to 1992 Susan Hall was on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts, New York City. She has also been a visiting artist and teacher at the University of Texas, San Antonio, the San Francisco Art Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of California. During her career she has received two National Endowment for the Arts awards and fellowships from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation. Her fine etchings are today included in such major collections as the Whitney Museum, New York, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Art. Susan Hall currently resides in Point Reyes Station, California, where she continues her career as a leading painter and printmaker.
Many of Hall's works of art deal with the juxtaposition of seemingly incongruous elements. In The Carrot Salad, for instance, the salad and its accessories occupy the lower portion of the image while scenes of racing greyhounds dominate the upper portion. Yet the composition becomes united by the strong design elements emerging from the table cloth and wall.
Edition: This original impression has been hand-coloured with watercolour and then given a specific number. Thus, The Carrot Salad is marked 'AP #10' -- meaning the tenth Artist Proof impression. Because of the work involved with each impression, each print is clearly a unique work of art.
