Chaim Gross

Mother Playing

Chaim Gross's original lithograph, "Mother Playing" is printed upon fine hand-made, laid paper and bearing the 'Rives' watermark and with full deckled margins as published in an edition of one hundred impressions in New York in 1973. This impression is signed, titled and numbered in pencil by Chaim Gross along the lower margin. As in his 'sculpture', recurrent themes of his lithographic art deal with motherhood and childhood. "Mother Playing" is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the Austrian / American artist Chaim Gross.

Note: Chaim Gross: Those acquainted with the history of modern sculpture will immediately recognize the name of Chaim Gross. Gross, however, was also a highly esteemed printmaker, particularly in the field of original lithography. Coming to the United States in 1921, Chaim Gross studied at the Educational Alliance in New York and at the Art Students League, under Robert Laurent. Chaim Gross began exhibiting both his sculpture and graphic art in 1935 at major expositions in Philadelphia and New York. During the following years his art was regularly included in major contemporary shows with the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and at the prestigious Whitney Museum.
After the Second World War, Chaim Gross's sculptures were commissioned world wide by such institutions as the Main Post Office, Washington, DC, the Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem, and the Temple Shaaray Tefila, New York. He was also the President of the Sculptors Guild of America and a full member of Artists Equity, the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. For a number of years, Chaim Gross was also influential as a professor of printmaking and sculpture in New York at both the Educational Alliance and at the New School for Social Research.
During the early 1970's, one of Chaim Gross's major concerns in both his sculpture and lithography was the theme of motherhood. As one can see from this original example, his lithographs dealing with this theme explore both spacial and sculptural concepts to create the essential elements of warmth and love. This work of art ranks among his greatest in this vein.
