Title: The Old Palace, Venice
Artist: Frank, Sepp (Germany, 1889 - 1970)
Date: c. 1930
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Note: Sepp Frank: A twentieth century German etcher and lithographer, Sepp Frank studied art in both Frankfort and Munich. His art was first exhibited in Germany shortly after the end of World War 1 (1918). Besides creating a number of fine individual etchings, Frank also illustrated books such as Shakespeare's Hamlet (1936), The Tales of Hoffmann (1927) and Goethe's Ballads (1925). He was also a leading designer of ex-libris bookplates and in this field it is estimated that he created over 300 works of miniature art. Many of these are considered masterworks of art deco ex-libris design.
Sepp Frank traveled and worked extensively throughout Germany, Spain, Italy and later in the United States. His original etchings were rarely numbered in specific editions but most appeared in numbers of one hundred or less. Etchings such as ,The Old Palace, Venice , clearly show that Sepp Frank was a master of design and atmosphere.
Today the art of Sepp Frank is included in many major public and private collections; not only in Germany but in such wide ranging institutions as the University of California at Berkeley and in the Athenaeum Museum of Finland.
