Clown Couple

Susan Willard Flint's original lithograph entitled Clown Couple is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published by Flint around 1930. Title: Clown Couple
Artist: Flint, Susan Willard (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1902 - 1984)
Date: c. 1930
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Susan Willard Flint stands as an example of one of those artists from the first half of the twentieth century (most of whom were female) who were largely self-taught and created their art in relative obscurity. This was particularly true during the Depression era, when tough economic times made it virtually impossible to secure a livelihood in the fine arts. Flint created some of her finest prints during this time and exhibited her original lithographs with the Salons of America in 1934 and 1936. Her art sprang not from the halls of academies and museums but from what she witnessed around her. Each of her creations was guided by a pure and innocent joy and thus - for lack of a better term - her art falls within the realm of 'folk art'.
Scholars and critics are now paying a great deal of attention to 'folk art'. Unfettered by artistic technique and theory, it expresses unique emotions and concerns. During the poorest of times, Susan Willard Flint depicted the delights of domestic life and of special events, such as the circus. Thus her art became an important vehicle against the harsh realities of the day. Seen from this light, her original lithographs (such as this fine example depicting a clown couple) become even more wonderful.
Edition: Clown Couple was not published in a regular edition. Those that do contain numbered editions usually fall within the range of only eight to twenty impressions. In all likelihood, Clown Couple exists in only a handful of signed impressions.
Size: 19 X 14 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
