Victoria Harbour (Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage)

Edward Francis Finden's original engraving, Victoria Harbour is based upon a design created by Sir John Ross for his Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a Northwest Passage. It is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full, large margins as published by Ross in London in 1834. This Canadian Arctic landscape view depicts a scene where the ship has arrived at Victoria Harbour and the small boats are headed for its shore. This historical engraving is a fine, original example of the art created by Sir John Ross and Edward Francis Finden.

Note: Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage: Sir John Ross’s second expedition did much to enlarge knowledge of the Canadian Arctic. During his four years of residency (isolated because of the loss of his ship, The Victory), Ross sent numerous expeditions out to chart then unknown lands. Upon returning to London he wrote his Narratavie of a Second Voyage and Included thirty original engravings detailing new lands and their inhabitants which was published in 1834. All of these important early Arctic engravings were designed by Ross himself. The 19th century engravers for this series included such British artists as, E. Finden, R. Brandard, W. Chevalier, W. S. Wilkinson and others. Edward Francis Finden engraved this particular historical engraving depicting A view of the ship and the landing of the boats from the shore of Victoria Harbour during the second voyage in search of the North-West Passage.
  Sir John Ross: Students of Canadian Arctic history will be very familiar with the name of Sir John Ross. Ross joined the East India Company in 1794 and the Royal Navy in 1805. He was appointed commander in the Baltic and North Sea from 1812 to 1817. Sir John Ross launched his first expedition in search of the North-West Passage in 1818 and his second voyage began in 1829 and ended four years later in 1833. Ross then served a consul at Stockholm between (1839 & 1846) and became Rear-Admiral in 1834.

Condition: Printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with full, large margins as published in London in 1834. Foxing exists in the margins (as usual) else a fine, strong impression and in good condition throughout. Victoria Harbour is a fine, original example of the art created by Edward Francis Finden for Sir John Ross's Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage.The historical importance of these early Ross Arctic engravings cannot be over estimated.
