William Faithorne

William Faithorne - Saint Mathew

Saint Mathew

William Faithorne's original seventeenth century engraving, "St. Mathew" (or, St. Matthew) was commissioned for a 1653 work by Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) entitled, "The Great Exemplar of Sanctity and Holy Life According to the Christian Institution". In art St. Mathew is generally portrayed as an evangelist. His major attribute is an angel standing near him and usually dictating his Gospel.

The caption for this biblical engraving reads, "'Saint Mathew': his Mathew and that Angel doth implie, Christe's royal ligne in his humanitie__ Manlike himself, deriving downs the same, To JOSEPH'S Tribe from faithfull ABRAHAM..."

Note: Before William Faithorne, the most talented artist engravers working in England were imported from the Continent. English engraving and etching had lagged far behind the artistic endeavors of other European countries. William Faithorne's powerfully engraved art would in a single stroke eliminate this imbalance.
Faithorne studied painting and engraving in London under Robert Peake. Peake was a staunch supporter of the ill fated King Charles the First and, when Civil War broke out, both William Faithorne and his master offered their services to the King. Faithorne was a member of the Royal Garrison and fought at the siege of Basing House (1643-1645). After the surrender he was imprisoned but was released two years later at the insistence of his friends but on the condition that he leave the country. For the following three years, William Faithorne lived and worked in Paris where he became acquainted with the greatest of French engravers, Robert Nanteuil. His contact with Nanteuil and Paris's other great masters of portrait engraving enabled him to develop and refine his own techniques.
In 1650, William Faithorne was granted a reprieve from his exile. He returned to London and began a successful career as both a leading engraver and a printseller. With the exception of a handful of late portraits he retired from his profession around 1680.
William Faithorne rightly dominates English 17th century engraving. Some of his famous portraits are among the best in the history of the art of engraving. His engraved illustrations for "The Great Exemplar" (1653) are among only a handful of works he created outside the genre of portraiture. In total, William Faithorne was commissioned to produce ten engravings to illustrate Jeremy Taylor's religious book. This impression of "St. Mathew" was printed before the 1692 edition when the title of the work was altered to "Antiquities Christianea"
