Title: Railway Battery
Artist: Drake, William Henry (New York, 1856 - 1926)
Date: c. 1880
Medium: Original Pen & Ink Drawing
William Henry Drake: Both a painter and an illustrator, William Henry Drake was a pupil of the Julien Academy in Paris, studying under Benjamin Constant and Doucet. He returned to New York in 1878 and gained employment as a free lance pen and ink artist for such periodicals as Harper's. Showing precise draughtsmanship in such diverse fields as animal studies, still lifes, landscapes and depictions of antique silver and bronzes, Drake's pen and ink drawings were in great demand during the 1880's and 1890's. Around the turn of the century, he also received commissions to illustrate books, including Stories of Child Life and The Book of the Jungle, by Kipling. Will H. Drake was elected an Associate of the prestigious National Academy in 1902.
Railway Battery dates from quite early in Drake's career. It clearly shows the remarkable details that made his pen and ink art so much in demand, particularly in the depictions of the train and its military carriage. Landscape touches round out the composition. Railway Battery most probably depicts an experiment of the American army.
