Robert Dighton - Tippy Bob The Natty Crop

Tippy Bob - The Natty Crop

Robert Dighton's original mezzotint designed "Tippy Bob - The Natty Crop", was published in London by Bowles & Carver around 1793. Tippy Bob was a character in a pantomime entitled, "Blue Beard or the Flight of Harlequin". It was first performed in London on December 21, 1791. With his high crowned hat and striped waistcoat, Tippy Bob is obviously a dedicated follower of fashion. This impression is printed on late eighteenth century wove paper, and bears the title, "Tippy Bob - The Natty Crop", the publisher's name and address, "Bowles & Carver", "No. 69, St. Paul's Church Yard, London", and publication number "373", along the lower margin. It is a fine, original example of the portrait art of Robert Dighton and of late eighteenth century English satirical etching.

Date: c. 1793
Medium: Original Mezzotint
Publisher: Bowles & Carver, St. Paul's Church Yard, London
Note: Robert Dighton: A late eighteenth and early nineteenth century satirical etcher and caricaturist, Robert Dighton was responsible for introducing a more realistic, less biting form of portrayal that came to be a leading element in Regency and early Victorian era satire. His style and method stretched far into the nineteenth century as all three of his sons (Denis Joshua and Richard Dighton) successfully followed in their father's footsteps. In a way, Robert Dighton and his sons were the precursors to the Vanity Fair style of the late nineteenth century.
Robert Dighton began exhibiting his etchings in 1769 at the Free Society of Artists and also exhibited at the Royal Academy, from 1775 to 1799. From 1774 to 1795, Robert Dighton worked as the primary designer for the published mezzotints of Carrington Bowles and Samuel Carver. Dighton's drawings were then engraved in mezzotint by unknown artists and sold in both plain and hand-coloured impressions. This original mezzotint, entitled, "Tippy Bob - The Natty Crop", was issued by this publisher around 1793. In 1793, Robert Dighton began both etching and publishing his best known etchings, "Collection of Portraits of Public Characters", which proved to be a great success for almost two decades.
One interesting and somewhat embarrassing incident in Robert Dighton's life took place at the British Museum. On the pretext of studying the etched art of Rembrandt and other old masters in the British Museum, Dighton would, on a number of occasions, wait for an unsuspecting moment and substitute his own copies for the valuable etchings. The ruse was eventually discovered and Dighton returned the etchings to their rightful place. Today the art of Robert Dighton will be found in such major collections as the Ashmolean Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and (yes) the British Museum.
