Francois Jacques Dequevauviller

Francois Jacques Dequevauviller - Portrait de Nicolas Kratzer Astronome or Portrait of Nicolas Kratzer Astronomer

Portrait de Nicolas Kratzer Astronome (Portrait of Nicolas Kratzer, Astronomer)

Francois Jacque Dequevauviller’s original engraving, "Portrait de Nicolas Kratzer Astronome", was commissioned in Paris in 1818 for a portfolio entitled, "Le Musee Royal". The set concentrated upon engraving masterworks of the 15th and 16th centuries housed in the Louvre. Hans Holbein painted this famous portrait in 1528. It is not only a wonderful portrayal of Kratzer but an accurate depiction of his astronomical instruments. This original engraving is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with large, full margins as published in Paris in 1818. (Portrait of Nicolas Kratzer, Astronomer) is a fine, original example of the portrait art by the French artist, Francois Jacques Dequevauviller.

Title: Portrait de Nicolas Kratzer Astronome (Portrait of Nicolas Kratzer, Astronomer)
Engraver: Dequevauviller, Francois Jacques (Paris, 1783 - 1848)
Designer: Holbein, Hans 'the Younger' (Augsburg, 1497 - London, 1543)
Date: 1818
Medium: Original Engraving
Publisher: P. Didot, Paris
Note: Francois Jacques Dequevauviller: An early nineteenth century French engraver, Francois Jacques Dequevauviller studied printmaking techniques under his father, Nicholas-Barthelemy Francois Dequevauviller (1745-1807). He then completed his art education under Boucher Desnoyers. Although he engraved several scenes after French artists of the era he is best known for his portraits, both after old masters and his contempories. Amongst the latter Francois Jacques Dequevauviller engraved the portraits of the Duc de Berry and the Cardinal de Beausset, both after Rigaud.
Hans Holbein (the Younger) : One of the greatest portrait painters of any era, Hans Holbein the Younger studied art techniques under his father, Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1465-1524). He arrived in Basel in 1515 and worked extensively there as both a painter and book illustrator. Hans Holbein visited England as a guest of Sir Thomas More in 1526 and had made it his permanent home by 1536 when he was appointed painter to the court of Henry VIII. His famous portraits created there of the King, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, Sir Thomas More and many others are among his greatest.

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco includes an impression of "Portrait de Nicolas Kratzer Astronome" in its permanent collection. The museum also attributes the engraving to the father, Nicholas-Barthelemy Francois Dequevauviller. As Nicholas-Barthelemy died in 1807, it seems more likely that the engraving was created by his son the portrait engraver, Francois Jacques Dequevauviller.

Nicolas Kratzer: An astronomer, mathematician and horologist, Nicolas Kratzer (1487-1550) was born and educated in Munich. He came to London in 1516 and joined the circle of Sir Thomas More. More introduced Nicolas Kratzer to the court of King Henry VIII and shortly thereafter he was appointed astronomer and clock maker the King. Kratzer was a close friend to both Sir Thomas More and Hans Holbein.
