Marcel Depre

Marcel Depre - Plaza

Plaza

Marcel Depre - "Plaza": Marcel Depre worked extensively in the south of France and in Northern Spain. An original lithograph, "Plaza" probably depicts the town square of a small city near the Spanish border. The artist's concerns with geometric form and function are here analyzed through the varying shapes of the buildings, the steps and the lines within the pavement of the actual plaza. This original impression is printed upon fine, archival paper and with full margins as published around 1970. It is pencil signed and numbered by Marcel Depre within the image along the lower margin.

Today such museums as the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Musee de la Marine include examples of Marcel Depre's art in their permanent collections.
"Plaza" is an intriguing example of Marcel Depre's lithographic art. Juxtaposed to the static lines and shapes of the plaza are the people of the town. In the foreground a mother with her baby in her arms appears to be scrutinizing the artist or us, the viewer. As Marcel Depre worked extensively in the South of France and in Northern Spain, this scene probably depicts the town square of a small city near the Spanish border.
