Note: Sherman Foote Denton (1856 - 1937), was an American watercolour artist, and author who created designs for various species of North American fish and wildlife. He worked for the United States Fish Commission at the Smithsonian Institute between 1896 and 1890. This original example of The Pickerel 'From a Pond in Massachusetts' (Lucius Reticulatus. Le Sueur.) was designed by Sherman Foote Denton for the "First Annual Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries, Game and Forests of the State of New York", published in Albany in 1895. Plates from the First Report are the most desirable as they include most of the important varieties of game fish, including species as bass, pike trout, pickerel, mascalonge and salmon. No finer examples of American natural history art will be found that that of Denton.
During the nineteenth century the State of New York was a leader in the field of American natural history prints. The finest art was to be found in the annual reports of the commissioners of Fisheries, Game and Forests, published from 1895 to 1902. Each yearly report contained fifteen to twenty original chromolithographs of state wildlife and the artists commissioned to create the plates included such well known natural history artists as Louis Agassiz Fuertes, J. L. Ridgway and Denton. Approximately half of the plates were created by Denton, and although he contributed fine images of animals such as The Virginia Deer and The Mongolian or Ring-Necked Pheasant, the overwhelming majority of his art was fish. His work was rendered with such brilliance and artistry that (even today) these original chromolithographs of fish were referred to simply as 'Denton's'.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Chromolithography proved to be of great benefit to botanists and zoologists. The almost infinite colour ranges derived from its multiple printings meant that, for the first time, a method of print-making could surpass hand colouring in its truth to nature. Unfortunately, the more economical advancements of photomechanical methods made this original and comles form of art all but obsolete by the end of the First World War.
