Philibert-Louis Debucourt: A famous French painter of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Philibert-Louis Debucourt studied art in Paris, under Vien. Most of Debucourt's early works were created in mezzotint, but around 1785 he began working in the medium he will always be best remembered for -- the aquatint. Newly invented, the aquatint medium appealed to Philibert-Louis Debucourt for its granular tones and hues. He began experimenting with larger plates and with designs printed entirely in colours. Thus one of the more important elements of Debucourt's aquatints
is that of innovation. |

Philibert-Louis Debucourt's influence spread to many genres. He was, as one can see from La Belle Frascatane, a gifted interpreter of portraits and old master designs. He was also one of the last great engravers of the 'Estampe Gallant'; those delightfully decadent French prints of noble intrigues and affairs which were most popular before the French Revolution. Lastly, he was also a satirist of his society, and one can see in some of his finest works, such as, Promenade du Palais-Royale, a direct line of comparison between Philibert-Louis Debucourt and his English contemporary, Thomas Rowlandson. Later, in the early 1800's, Debucourt again attracted international attention with his fine aquatints after the designs of Carle Vernet and others. La Belle Frascatane is a fine, original example of the art by Philibert-Louis Debucourt published by Bance & Aumont, Paris. |

Raphael (Raffaello Santi or Raffaello Sanzio di Urbino): Although he lived only thirty-seven years Raphael stands at the summit of High Renaissance art. He entered the workshop of Perugino in Perugia some time before 1499 and remained there until 1504. He then worked for four years in Florence before moving permanently to Rome. There Raphael was commissioned by Pope Julius II to decorate the papal apartments. Such famous frescoes as the School of Athens were completed by 1511. In 1513, Leo X became
Pope and appointed Raphael his Prefect of Antiquities. Raphael's duties now widened to include architecture, archaeology and tapestry design. Upon his early death in 1520, Raphael was buried with the highest honors in the Pantheon. Raphael is also listed as Raffaello Sanzio di Urbino. |
