Jan De Ruth

Jan De Ruth - Figure Study 2 Reclining Woman

Figure Study #2 (Reclining Woman)

Jan De Ruth's original lithograph, Figure Study #2 (Reclining Woman) hails from his portfolio published in New York in 1967. Commissioned by the Associated American Artists, the unbound portfolio contained a suite of six original lithographs published in a limited edition of one hundred and fifty impressions. They were hand printed by Burr Miller of George C. Miller and Son, New York. The stones were then effaced to prevent any further editions.

This study of a reclining woman is printed upon archival 'Rives' paper and with full, deckled margins and is signed and numbered, '55/150', by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. It is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the Czech/American artist, Jan De Ruth.

Note: "There is no end - no final result - to be found in drawing the human body. I have never seen two gestures that are alike. ... It is nature's most perfect and most imperfect creation, communicating, even in silence and immobility, the physical power - and frailty - of humanity" Jan De Ruth *
Jan De Ruth's young adult years were anything but hopeful. During the Second World War (1939-1945) he was imprisoned in no less than five concentration camps, including the horrific Auschwitz. As a prisoner he managed to scrounge bits of paper and pencils and actually 'sold' his first drawing to a prison guard in exchange for a piece of bread. During this time he made four unsuccessful escape attempts. Finally, in 1945, De Ruth was transferred to a concentration camp close to his Czechoslovakian home. Being very familiar with the surrounding terrain, his fifth attempt at freedom proved fruitful.
After the war Jan De Ruth remained in Czechoslovakia for a period of one year. He then managed (with the aid of forged documents) to flee to England where he enrolled in the Ruskin Art School, Oxford University. In 1948 he emigrated to the United States and concluded his formal education at the Art Students League of New York, under Frederic Taubes.
For the following seven years, Jan De Ruth supported himself in such varying occupations as fashion designer, stage manager, actor and vacuum cleaner salesman. He exhibited his first painting in 1955 and held his first one man show in New York two years later.
Concentrating upon portraits and nude studies, Jan De Ruth's lithographs and paintings were exhibited at such major institutions and associations as the Allied Artists of America, the American Artists Professional League, Audubon Artists, Boston Society of Independent Artists, New York City Center, the New York State Exposition, the National Arts Club and the National Academy of Design. He also received such prestigious awards as the Butler Institute of American Art Purchase Prize, Audubon Artists' Grumbacher Purchase Prize, and the National Arts Club of America Gold Medal. De Ruth authored two important books, Portrait Painting (1964) and Painting the Nude (1968).
In 1967 the Associated American Artists, New York, commissioned Jan De Ruth for a suite of six original lithographs, which were published unbound in a portfolio entitled, The Nude by Jan De Ruth. Each of these lithographs was published in a signed and limited edition of 150 impressions on archival Rives heavy-weight paper. The lithographs were hand printed by Burr Miller of George C. Miller and Son, New York. The stones were then effaced to prevent any further editions. This reclining figure study hails from this portfolio.
Since its creation in the mid 1930's, the Associated American Artists was responsible for commissioning original graphic art from many of America's greatest masters such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton and Reginald Marsh. In the 1950's and 1960's it continued to provide outstanding lithographs etchings and woodcuts by such artists as Chaim Koppelman, Jack Levine, Jan De Ruth and many other great American and international printmakers.
