Nathaniel Currier

Nathaniel Currier - The Cracovienne Danced by Fanny Elssler In the Grand Ballet of The Gypsey

The Cracovienne, Danced by Fanny Elssler, In the Grand Ballet of The Gypsey

Nathaniel Currier's original lithograph, The Cracovienne, Danced by Fanny Elssler, In the Grand Ballet of ‘The Gypsey’, predates the establishment of the Currier & Ives partnership by at least fifteen years. This very early Currier lithograph was commissioned for the front cover of a six page publication of sheet music from the Ballet of The Gypsey, composed by Nicholas-Charles Bochsa (or, Bocsha).

Most surviving impressions of "The Cracovienne" have been detached from the accompanying sheet music. This original Nathaniel Currier impression, however, is complete with the six pages of the musical score. It is printed upon white wove paper and with full margins as published in New York around 1842 and bearing the printed signature, "N. Currier’s Lith. NY", within the image to the lower right. "The Cracovienne, Danced by Fanny Elssler, In the Grand Ballet of ‘The Gypsey’" is both a scarce and important example of the early art of Nathaniel Currier.

Printer: Currier, Nathaniel (Roxbury, MA, 1813 - New York City, 1888)
Date: c. 1840 - 1842
Medium: Original Lithograph

Note: Nathaniel Currier: In 1835 Nathaniel Currier began his lithographic publishing house in New York. During the following decades his business grew significantly, with his artists creating scenes to cover a vast range of subjects of interest to mid nineteenth century America. Military, sporting and domestic scenes, newsworthy events, portraits, landscapes, urban views, religious and genre imagery, were all created for the rapidly growing and increasingly prosperous American public.
In 1852, a young bookkeeper, James Merritt Ives (1824-1895), was hired by Currier. Five years later the legendary firm of Currier & Ives was born. Together, Currier & Ives dominated the American print publishing business. They produced thousands of lithographs which were distributed and sold in every town, city and village across the United States. The last Currier & Ives lithograph was published in 1907. Quite simply stated, Currier and Ives captured the spirit of nineteenth century America.
Note: Fanny Elssler (Austria, 1810-1884) was one of the most famous dancers of the nineteenth century. Among her many admirers was Theophile Gautier, who wrote, "It can be emphatically stated that Mlle. Fanny Elssler is the most beautiful of all the women appearing on the stage today."
In 1840 Fanny Elssler began a very successful two-year tour of the United States. It is thus likely to assume that Nathaniel Currier’s, "The Cracovienne, Danced by Fanny Elssler, In the Grand Ballet of ‘The Gypsey’", dates from this period. Currier also created a lithograph of this dancer performing the Shadow Dance at around the same time.
A large collection of contemporary prints by various artists portraying Fanny Elssler will be found at the Allison Delarue Collection, Princeton University.
The Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, lists an impression of The Cracovienne, Danced by Fanny Elssler, In the Grand Ballet of ‘The Gypsey’ in its permanent collection (ID# 1928.1065).
