Title: Ship of Fools
Artist: Crown, A. David (Born, London, England - Resides, Gainesville, Florida)
Date: c. 2005
Medium: Original Mezzotint & Drypoint
Publisher: A. David Crown
Note: A. David Crown M. D.: A distinguished artist and physician, A. David Crown studied at Cambridge University, the University of London and the London Hospital Medical School. He became a physician in 1947 and the following year he left England to practice medicine in Rochester, New York. He resided in that city until his retirement in 1982. David Crown moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1983.
A versatile artist, A. David Crown has produced paintings, woodcuts, etchings, collographs and sculpture in steel, aluminum and bronze. He is, however, best known for his fine work in the demanding medium of the mezzotint. "Ship of Fools" is a beautiful example of his art in this technique, fully delineating its rich, velvety hues and tonal values.
The art of A. David Crown has been the subject of one man exhibitions at such institutions as the Jacksonville Museum of Art, the Polk Museum of Art, Orlando Museum of Art, Florida Atlantic University, University of Florida and the State Capitol Building Rotunda, Tallahassee, Florida. A. David Crown M. D is also the founder (1997) and director of the International Mezzotint Society. Today his art is included in the permanent collections of the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art (University of Florida), the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Museum, Utica, New York, and the British Museum, London, England.

"Many artists evolve gradually over the years towards a particular kind of expression and technique easily recognized as their characteristic personal style to which, with minor variations, they adhere. They are known for that certain kind of work and that is what they continue doing ever more. But for me that would be terribly boring. I like many different kinds of art and I have used almost every kind of print making method. This is also why, although many themes are recurring, my images and iconography can be very diverse.

... Some of my mezzotints are created in the classical manner, others may be created with the rocker alone without burnishing. Some incorporate dry point, rouleau, masks, etc., and in some cases four or five plates with multiple passes through the press. I rock the plates and print them myself in small editions that rarely exceed 25." A. David Crown M. D.
