Le Retour de la Peche (Back from Fishing)

Pierre Cottin's original engraving and stipple, "Le Retour de la Peche" (Back from Fishing) is based upon a design created by the Belgian artist, Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans. It is printed upon fine nineteenth century china paper which, has been impressed onto a large sheet of nineteenth century white wove paper and with full margins as published around 1885. This impression bears the full title, "Le Retour de la Peche" the publishers' names and addresses, "Boussod Valladon & Cie. Imprimeurs, Paris" & "Max Jacoby, New York", the painter's name "Peint Par J. Coomans" and the etcher's name, "Grave Par P. Cottin" in the lower margin above the plate-mark. It depicts a genre scene on a balcony where the mother and five children watch the fisherman displaying his catch. "Le Retour de la Peche" is a prime, original example of the art created by the 19th century French artist, Pierre Cottin.

Note: Pierre Cottin: A foremost nineteenth century French painter and etcher of landscapes and genre scenes, Pierre Cottin studied art under Jazet in Paris. Cottin first gained recognition for his etchings after the designs of contemporary painters, such as Schoppin, Euder, Vernet, Bellange and Rosa Bonheur.
Beginning around 1860, however Pierre Cottin began to create etchings based solely upon his own work. He was quickly received as a creative etcher of the first rank, and he continued to produce original etchings until the year of his death in 1886.
Perhaps the most technically demanding form of original printmaking, the mixed method engraving reached its apex during the later Victorian era. Highly skilled engravers would often devote more than a full year's work to one large engraving, combining such complex mediums as mezzotinting, aquatinting, stippling, etching and engraving to produce remarkable effects in black and white. During the mid and late nineteenth century these large engravings became the driving force of the Victorian art world.
Note: Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans, 'Pierre Coomans' : An important nineteenth century Belgian painter of genre and landscape scenes, Pierre Coomans, (1816 - 1889) gained high recognition for his Romantic Realism and Allegorical paintings. Le Musee de Stuttgart houses the famous painting, Sapho et Famille Romaine in its collection.
