Harold Cohn

Harold Cohn - Figure Study

Figure Study

Harold Cohn's original pen and ink drawing, "Figure Study" is a brilliant example of his artistic technique. In this original drawing, the artist uses only a minimum of rapidly drawn lines to create a portrait of great weight and emotional presence. It is drawn upon wove paper with full margins and is signed in pencil by the American artist to the lower right.

Title: Figure Study
Artist: Cohn, Harold (Michigan, 1908 - 1982)
Date: c. 1950 - 1960
Medium: Original Pen and Ink Drawing
Note: Harold Cohn: A modern American painter, designer and lithographer, Harold Cohn began exhibiting his art in Detroit around 1930. By 1940 his paintings and drawings were regularly included in annual exhibitions of art at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Fine Arts and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
During his career Harold Cohn explored many elements of contemporary art. Some of his paintings and drawings (particularly the landscapes and still lifes) are related to Cubism in their manner of construction. Others (most notably his nudes) bear a relationship to Expressionism. Finally, some of his art (such as this original example) is deliberately simplified in order to load each line with power and meaning. Such experiments remind us of Matisse's art.
Figure Study is a brilliant example of Cohn's artistic technique. Using only a minimum of rapidly drawn lines he has created a portrait of great weight and emotional presence.
