Attributed to Paul Lewis Clemens - Speedway

Speedway

Paul Lewis Clemens - Speedway: This original lithograph is printed upon hand-made, laid paper bearing the 'Rives' watermark and with full margins as published around 1940. Speedway depicts the sport of auto racing, probably the Indianapolis 500. This lithograph is attributed to the American artist, Paul Clemens. It is a scarce, original example of early auto racing art.

Title: Speedway
Artist: Attributed to Paul Lewis Clemens (Superior, Wisconsin, 1911 - 1992)
Date: c. 1940
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Although this important American racing lithograph is unsigned, it is clearly allied both stylistically and thematically to the art of Paul Lewis Clemens. From 1938 to 1945, Paul Clemens was the only serious American artist devoting most of his creative energy to the world of sports. Most particularly, Paul Clemens concentrated his depictions upon baseball, football, auto and horse racing. A native of Superior Wisconsin, and a student of Oskar Hagen at the art school of the University of Wisconsin, Clemens began creating original lithographs around 1936. After the end of the Second World War, he also produced many fine lithographs of landscapes and city scenes.
Speedway is both an important and striking example of early racing art. The scene probably depicts the Indianapolis 500, which even then was the most important auto racing event in the country. In the great American Regionalist style of the late Depression era, the artist has captured both the drama and excitement of the race. Needless to say, any original work of art dealing with early auto racing is extremely scarce.
Size: 10 X 14 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)

Speedway is an extremely scarce, original example of early auto racing art.
