Sidney Chafetz's original etching & aquatint portrait, "Debussy" was published by the Associated American Artists of New York in 1968 in a sole limited edition of two hundred and fifty impressions. It is signed, dated, numbered and titled by Sidney Chafetz in pencil along the lower margin. Along with his woodcut portrayal of Sigmund Freud, Chafetz's "Debussy" is regarded as one of his greatest works of art.

Note: Sidney Chafetz: The former professor and chairman of the department of Paintings, Drawings and Graphics at Ohio State University, Sidney Chafetz initially gained international recognition in 1947 when he won the first Painting Prize from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Fontainbleau, France. Since then he has been a recipient of a Tiffany Grant, a Fullbright Fellowship and more than thirty first prizes and numerous awards from major exhibitions. One man shows of his art have been held in New York, St. Louis and in Paris, France.
  Known equally for his paintings and his graphic work, Sidney Chafetz's art is now included in the permanent collections of such major institutions as the Library of Congress, Washington, The New York Public Library, Brown University and the Cleveland Museum of Art. He is recognized as a modern master of both the etching and woodcut mediums.
  During the 1960's, Sidney Chafetz became best known for his satirical art and for his incisive portrayals of cultural leaders and icons. He stated, "In another environment, I might want to concern myself with purely technical, compositional, or poetic experimentations. At the moment, I see too many absurd things around me to indulge in these luxuries." * Debussy is a superb example of Sidney Chafetz's ability to capture the spirit of a cultural icon; in this case, that of the great Impressionist composer. (James Watrous, A Century of American Printmaking: 1880-1980, Madison, The University of Wisconsin Press, 1984, pp. 289 & 290).
  Debussy was commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York in 1968 in a sole limited edition of 250 impressions.
  Associated American Artists: Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's as contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns and Sidney Chafetz.

Condition: Printed upon thick wove paper and with full margins as published in New York in 1968 in the limited edition of 250 impressions. Signed, dated, numbered and titled by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. It is a superb impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original etching represents a prime example of the outstanding art of Sidney Chafetz. Along with his woodcut portrayal of Sigmund Freud, Chafetz's Debussy is regarded as one of his greatest works of art.
