Hilda Castellon - The Flowered Hat

The Flowered Hat

Hilda Castellon's original lithograph, "The Flowered Hat" is printed upon, 'Rives' watermaked, laid paper and with full, deckled margins as published in the limited edition of twenty five signed impressions. This impression is signed, dedicated and numbered, '9/25' by Hilda Castellon in pencil under the image and hails from the collection of Roger Trlak, bearing his inventory number, 'T-763'". The Flowered Hat" is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the American artist, Hilda Castellon.

Title: The Flowered Hat
Artist: Castellon, Hilda (U.S.A., Active 1950 - 1980)
Date: c, 1965 - 1975
Medium: Original Colour Lithograph
Note: Hilda Castellon: The wife of the famous Spanish American printmaker, Frederico Castellon (1914-1971), Hilda Castellon was a fine and a greatly underrated artist. Part of the reason for the critics' lack of appreciation was no doubt that stylistically her printmaking techniques and imagery were quite similar to that of her husband. Yet, temperamentally their work is not at all similar. Where Frederico Castellon uses his imagery to explore a surreal world of dreams and nightmares, the imagery of Hilda Castellon is based much more upon a personal world of observation. One who recognized the unique qualities of Hilda Castellon's art was none other than Fritz Eichenberg, who wrote that she was " a talented artist in her own right." *
During the 1960's and 1970's Hilda Castellon created a number of fine color lithographs. Some were published by the Associated Artists of New York, usually in editions of 250. The Flowered Hat, however, was published in a very small edition of only 25 impressions. This particular impression is dedicated to Roger Trlak.
Provenance: From the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, 'T-763', along the lower corner. Hilda Castellon has written along the lower margin of The Flowered Hat, "Dear Roger, Truly enjoyed meeting you, Hilda." Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Jacob Landau, Birgit Skiold, Derrick Greaves and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Contemporary prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death.
