Antonio Capellani & Raphael Mengs

Antonio Capellani and Raphael Mengs - Saint Peter

Saint Peter

Antonio Capellani's original engraving, "Saint Peter" is based upon a design created by Raphael Mengs. It is printed upon eighteenth century laid paper and with full margins as published in Rome between 1770 and 1780. Containing the full dedication to Pope Pius VI along the lower margin. Here, Saint Peter sits on a throne surrounded by motifs of ancient Egyptian origin. It is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the Italian artist, Antonio Capellani and of eighteenth century engraving techniques.

Note: Antonio Capellani: A later eighteenth century Italian engraver, Antonio Capellani studied under Wagner, in Venice. He first gained widespread attention for his portrait engravings commissioned for a 1760 edition of Vasari. During the following years, Antonio Capellani worked in both Rome and Venice and engraved important plates after Michelangelo, Panini, Maiotto and Correggio. He also produced a number of fine works after the designs of contemporary painters, such as Raphael Mengs (1728-1779).
Apart from the obvious beauty of this large, engraved representation of Saint Peter, is the elaborate number of motifs of ancient Egyptian origin. Relics from the tombs of the Pharaohs were just beginning to be unearthed at this time, and this engraving reflects late eighteenth century European fascination with all things relating to the ancient Egyptian empire.
