Note: Shirley Aley Campbell 'Shirley Campbell': A contemporary American painter of both nudes and social conditions, Shirley Aley Campbell took early studies under Milton J. Fox, at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and under E. Zweibrook, in Estes Park, Colorado. She then completed her education at the Cleveland Institute of Art, at the Art Students' League, New York (under Jules Olitski) and at the Pratt Institute.
  Shirley Aley Campbell began exhibiting her art in the mid 1940's. Since that time her paintings and drawings have received awards from the Cleveland Institute of Art (1947), the Cleveland Museum of Art (1956, 1957, 1958) and the Cleveland Arts Prize (1986). She has also taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cuyahoga Community College and the Cooper School of Art. In 2011, the Cleveland Artists Foundation held a retrospective honoring her work, The Way of All Flesh and Born in the Wild.
  Today the art of Shirley Campbell is included in such major collections as the Butler Institute of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kansas City Museum of art the UCLA Collection and other important institutions. Private galleries in both Cleveland and Chicago represent her work. In 1995 the book by Elizabeth McClelland, The Art of Shirley Aley Campbell, was published.
  Throughout her career as as figurative artist Shirley Campbell has often explored what is generally termed the more shadowy elements of society. Hers, however, is not an art of commentary or criticism; rather she focuses upon the humanity to be found in these outcast sub-cultures with both realism and compassion.

Condition: Drawn upon thin wove paper and with large, full margins. Containing slight mat burning in the outer margins, else in good condition throughout. Signed by the artist to the lower right. Figure Study represents a large and impressive example of the figurative art of Shirley Aley Campbell.
