Roy H. Brown

Roy Brown - A Scene in The French Countryside

A Scene in The French Countryside

"A Scene in The French Countryside" is an original graphite drawing created by the American artist, Roy H. Brown in 1910. It is drawn upon tan wove paper and with wide margins and signed by Roy Brown in the lower right margin. Here, Roy Brown seems to be exploring comparable compositional elements within the medium of black and white drawing. This composition is clearly from the hand of a gifted landscape artist.

Title: A Scene in The French Countryside
Artist: Brown, Roy H. (Decatur, Illinois, 1879 - New York City, 1956)
Date: 1910
Medium: Original Graphite Drawing
Note: Roy H. Brown 'Roy Brown': A talented American landscape painter and illustrator, Roy H. Brown first studied art in New York at the Art Students League. He then completed his artistic education in Paris, studying under both Menard and Rafaelli. Roy Brown then remained in Paris for several years and frequently exhibited his art there. He returned permanently to live in the United States shortly before the outbreak of World War One.
By 1920, Roy Brown had established a national reputation in America for both his landscape paintings and drawings. He was elected a full member of the Academy of National Artists and an Associate of the prestigious National Academy of Design, Washington. Today examples of his art are included in such major institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University and the National Arts Club, New York.
A Scene in the French Countryside dates from Roy H. Brown's working years in France (c. 1910). It is an exceptional composition worked entirely in heavy graphite. It strikes a similar chord to the art of Roy Brown's great teacher in Paris, Jean-Francois Raffaelli (1850-1924), in that the scene is dominated by patterns of rapid yet graceful lines. Raffaelli was most noted for his colour etchings of urban scenes. Here, Roy Brown seems to be exploring comparable compositional elements within the medium of black and white drawing. A Scene in the French Countryside is clearly from the hand of a most gifted landscape artist.
