Title: Intended Flight
Artist: Blanch, Lucile 'Lucile Lundquist' (Minneapolis, 1895 - Woodstock, New York, 1981)
Date: c. 1950
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Lucile Blanch (Lucile Lundquist Blanch): A fine American painter and print maker, Lucile Blanch, born Lucile Lundquist studied for four years at the Minneapolis School of Art (1914-1918). It is remarkable to consider that from this relatively small school, Lucile Lundquist's fellow students included Adolf Dehn, Harry Gottlieb and her future husband, Arnold Blanch (1896-1968). After the end of the First World War, both Lucile Lundquist and Arnold Blanch enrolled in the Art Students League, New York, studying under Kenneth Hayes Miller and Boardman Robinson. They married shortly thereafter and settled in Woodstock, New York, which was then beginning to become an important colony for young artists.
Lucile and Arnold Blanch first supported themselves in Woodstock by operating a small cafeteria and by weaving and selling tapestries. Recognition came first to both artists in the mid 1920's. Arnold Blanch was the more representational artist and became famous for his paintings and lithographs of landscapes and still lifes. Lucile Blanch showed a marked inclination towards design elements and by the mid 1940's had moved almost fully to abstraction, such is the case with this original Lucile Blanch lithograph entitled, Intended Flight.
During her career, Lucile Lundquist Blanch received the coveted scholarship to the New York Art Students' League, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and several other important awards. Lucile Blanch's lithographs and paintings were regularly exhibited at the annual shows of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, in New York. She was a member of important American artist institutions, such as the Woodstock Art Association, the Sarasota Federation of Arts, the American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, and the American Artists Congress. Museums which include examples of her art within their collections are the Corcoran Museum, Philadelphia, the Wichita Art Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and other important public and private collections.
