Saul Berman

Saul Berman - Reconstruction on the Hudson

Reconstruction on the Hudson

Saul Berman's original lithograph "Reconstruction on the Hudson" is printed on wove paper with full margins and is signed, titled in pencil along the lower margin and also signed within the stone to the lower right. Most of Saul Berman's contributions from 1935 to 1940 are fascinating scenes of period construction projects in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and are thus of great historical and artistic importance. "Reconstruction on the Hudson" is a fine, original example of the New York art created by this American artist during this period.

Title: Reconstruction on the Hudson
Artist: Berman, Saul (Russia, 1899 - Provincetown, MA, 1975)
Date: c. 1935 - 1940
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Saul Berman: Born in Russia, Saul Berman immigrated to America at an early age. He studied art at both the Educational Alliance and the National Academy in New York. He then completed his studies under Charles Hawthorne. Saul Berman first gained national recognition in 1920 when a submitted work of his art received honorable mention at the Chicago Art Institute. By 1930 his art was included in major exhibitions throughout America.
Saul Berman was equally adept in the mediums of painting, etching and lithography. Some of his finest work was created during the Great Depression era.
Most of Saul Berman's contributions from 1935 to 1940 are fascinating scenes of period construction projects in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and are thus of great historical and artistic importance. Like many works of art from this period, his fine etchings and lithographs were rarely numbered in specific editions. Given the economic climate of the times, however, it is unlikely that more than a handful of impressions for Reconstruction on the Hudson were printed.
Today the art of Saul Berman is included in the following public collections; the New York Historical Society, the Mobile Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
Size: 7 1/2 X 19 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on wove paper and with full margins. Signed and titled in pencil along the lower margin and signed within the stone to the lower right. Containing two marginal tears (one to the center right and one to the center left). The tear to the right extends about one inch into the image while the tear to the left extends about one half inch into the image. Both tears have been rebacked by a former owner. Also a slight stain is evident in the lower left margin, under the title. Else a strong, vibrant impression. Even with the above mentioned damage, Reconstruction on the Hudson is a large and most important example of the New York art of Saul Berman.
Price: Sold - The price is no longer available.
