Fletcher Benton

Plate I (An Intaglio Composition)

Fletcher Benton, a major Kinetic sculptor, created this original embossed intaglio entitled, Plate I in 1972. It deals with the illusion of motion created by lines, forms and colors as well as examining sculptural concerns. Here, the artist has created a silver sphere, within it, he has placed a large square, corners angled and centered within the image. Benton has also inserted a corner frame containing various color lines within its borders. Plate I (An Intaglio Composition) represents a fine, original example of the graphic art created by the contemporary American artist, Fletcher Benton.

This impression is printed upon pure rag paper and with full margins as published in an edition of one hundred impressions and bears a publisher's blindstamp to the lower left. Plate I is signed, dated and numbered, by Benton in pencil along the lower margin.

Note: Fletcher Benton: A leading contemporary sculptor, Fletcher Benton received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1956 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Benton began his teaching career three years later at the California College of Arts and Crafts and also served as an instructor at the San Francisco Art Institute, from 1964 to 1967. Since 1968 Fletcher Benton has been a professor at San Jose State University.
  Fletcher Benton began exhibiting his art in California as early as 1961. Since that date his sculpture, paintings, drawings and prints have been the subject of exhibitions not only throughout America but in Belgium, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, Germany and England. Today his fine art is included in such major collections as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Stanford University Museum of Art, University of California, Denver Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D. C., the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
  Fletcher Benton first gained national recognition as a major Kinetic sculptor. Briefly, Kinetic art explores elements of real or apparent movement. Such twentieth century artists as Calder, Agam, Duchamp and Tinguely were pioneers in this field. Plate I an original embossed intaglio composition created in 1972, brilliantly deals with the illusion of motion created by lines, forms and colors as well as examining sculptural concerns.
Edition: Limited edition of one hundred impressions, numbered 69/100.
Provenance: From the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, 'T-1026', on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international artists as Joseph Hirsch, Fletcher Benton, Luigi Lucioni and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death.
