Maurice de Becque

Maurice de Becque - Bien loin d'ici from Les fleurs du Mal

Bien loin d'ici from 'Les fleurs du Mal' (Ever So far From Here from 'The Flowers of Evil')

Maurice de Becque’s original etching and aquatint, "Bien loin d’ici" (Ever So Far from Here) was commissioned in 1920 to illustrate Charles Baudelaire’s influential poetry in "Les fleurs du mal" (Flowers of Evil). This original etching was limited to an edition of one hundred and fifty signed s. It is printed upon archival paper with the ‘Rives’ watermark and with full margins as published in Paris by Georges Cres in 1920. "Bien loin d’ici" represents a prime, original example of the illustrative art created by the French artist, Maurice Jaubert de Becque.

Title: Bien loin d'ici from 'Les fleurs du Mal' (Ever So far From Here from 'The Flowers of Evil')
Artist: Becque, Maurice Jaubert de 'Maurice de Becque' (Saumur, France, 1878 - Paris, ?)
Date: 1920
Medium: Original Etching & Aquatint
Publisher: Georges Cres, Paris
Note: Maurice Jaubert de Becque 'Maurice de Becque ': An early twentieth century French etcher, painter and illustrator, Maurice de Becque studied art in Paris and was a regular exhibitor there at the Salon d’Automne. His finest accomplishments, however, were in the field of the illustrated book, which he adorned with many original etchings. He was commissioned by Paris publishers to illustrate the wide ranging writings of such authors as Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), Daudet, Gautier, Juvenal, Kipling, La Fontaine, Loti, Rimbaud, Stendhal and Villon. De Becque sometimes signed his etched art with the pseudonym, 'Maurice d'Attys'.
Maurice de Becque illustrated at least two books featuring the poetry of Charles Baudelaire; "Les Fleurs du Mal and Pieces condamnees de Charles Baudelaire". "Bien loin d’ici" was etched for "Les Fleurs du Mal" in 1920. Altogether Maurice de Becque contributed twelve original etchings for this project. Each etching was limited to 150 signed s.

Many translations into English have been made of this classic. I prefer this version of Bien loin d’ici.

Ever So Far from Here

This is the house, the sacred box,
Where, always draped in languorous frocks,
And always at home if someone knocks,

One elbow into the pillow pressed,
She lies, and lazily fans her breast,
While fountains weep their soulfullest:

This is the chamber of Dorothy
--Fountain and breeze for her alone
Sob in that soothing undertone.
Was ever so spoiled a harlot known?

With odorous oils and rosemary,
Benzoin and every unguent grown,
Her skin is rubbed most delicately.
--The flowers are faint with ecstasy

(Edna St. Vincent Millay, "Flowers of Evil", Harper & Brothers, New York, 1936).
