Thomas Harold Beament

Thomas Harold Beament - Ocean Sky and Iceberg Exploring the Canadian Arctic

Ocean, Sky and Iceberg (Exploring the Canadian Arctic)

Thomas Harold Beament's original graphite drawing, Ocean, Sky and Iceberg (Exploring the Canadian Arctic) dates from around the year 1947. At this time the artist was living and working in Canada’s far north, particularly in and around the Arctic area of Baffin Island. The paintings, drawings and prints Beament created of this land and its native peoples are highly regarded. Shortly after his return to Montreal Harold Beament was commissioned by the Government of Canada to create the famous stamp of Inuit hunter in his kayak. Ocean, Sky and Iceberg (Exploring the Canadian Arctic) is a striking, original example of the art created by Harold Beament, one of Canada's greatest twentieth century realist artists and the former President of the Royal Canadian Academy.

Title: Ocean, Sky and Iceberg (Exploring the Canadian Arctic)
Artist: Beament, Thomas Harold 'Harold Beament' (Ottawa, 1898 - Montreal, 1984)
Date: c. 1947
Medium: Original Graphite Drawing
Note: Thomas Harold Beament: One of Canada's best landscape and figurative artists, Thomas Harold Beament R.C.A. initially followed several careers. Serving with the Royal Canadian Naval volunteers (1917 - 1918) he rose to the rank of Warrant Officer and was decorated. He then studied law at Osgood Hall, Toronto, also attending classes under J. W. Beatty (John William Beatty, '1869-1941') at the Ontario College of Art. He was admitted to the Bar in 1923 and also taught at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. In 1935 received the Jessie Dow Prize at the Montreal Spring Exhibition. Beament returned to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939. During the Second World War, Harold Beament first commanded minesweepers and escorted vessels before serving as the Senior Naval War Artist from 1943 to 1947.
In 1946, Thomas Harold Beament was elected a Royal Canadian Academician. He took over the Presidency of the Royal Canadian Academy (A.R.C.A.), from George Franklin Arbuckle (1909-2001), in 1964. A master of oils, watercolours and drawings, his art is included in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, The Dominion Archives, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of the Province of Quebec, the Seagram Collection and elsewhere.
The year 1947 represents one of Harold Beament's greatest periods of creativity. He had just retired from the navy and then embarked upon a journey to live with and study the Inuit peoples of Baffin Island. Therefore, along with Lawren S. Harris (1885-1970) and A. Y. Jackson (1882-1974), Thomas Harold Beament was one of the first artists to explore the Arctic. The drawings and paintings he made at this time of the area and its people are regarded among his greatest works of art. Upon his return to Montreal, Beament was commissioned by the Canadian Government to create the famous 10-cent stamp of the hunter in his kayak and was also invited to make lithographs and serigraphs based upon his Arctic drawings.
Ocean, Sky and Iceberg (Exploring the Canadian Arctic) is a most compelling work of art from this period. Within the space of eleven by eight and a half inches the artist has conveyed a sense of great depth and space as well as delineating the brilliant light of this captivating land.
The Canadian Arctic Archipelago is a group of over thirty six thousand islands located north of the Canadian mainland, comprising much of the territory of Nunavut and part of the Northwest territories. Baffin Island, named after the English explorer William Baffin (c. 1584-1622), lies above the Arctic Circle, and is located in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It is the largest island in Canada and in the Arctic Archipelago. The Penny Ice Cap in the Auyuittuq National Park of Baffin Island, named after Captain William Penny, and the Barnes Ice Cap, found in the central part of Baffin Island are said to be the largest ice caps on the Island.
