Title: A Figure Study
Artist: Baes, Emile (Brussels, 1879 - Paris, 1954)
Date: c. 1940
Medium: Original Soft Ground Etching
Note: Emile Baes: A great painter, etcher and illustrator of the nude, Emile Baes studied art first at the Brussels Academy and then under J. Stallaert in Paris from 1895 to 1901. As well, Emile Baes received lessons from Bonnat and Cabanel. Emile Baes began exhibiting his art in 1903 at the Salon in Brussels and was a frequent exhibitor there for the following decades. He also displayed his paintings in Paris at the Automne Salon (1928 through 1933) and at the Salon des Artistes Francais (1933 through 1939). Today his art is included in many major public collections in both France and Belgium.
Most of Emile Baes's original etchings and illustrations for books date from the 1930's and 1940's. Unlike his more ist style of painting, Baes's graphic art is notable for its elements of Symbolism. In many of these works, the nineteenth century literature of Gustave Flaubert plays a dominant role. Thus this may be the case with the present etching, A Figure Study. In any case, it is a beautiful example of Emile Baes's great skill as an artist of the nude.
