B. Schott, Paris

B. Schott - Polka des Postillons du Ballet La Vivandiere

Polka des Postillons du Ballet 'La Vivandiere'

Title: Polka des Postillons du Ballet 'La Vivandiere'
Publisher: B. Schott, Paris
Date: c. 1840 - 1850
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Sheet Music Covers: Some of the best art of the nineteenth century is found on lithographic sheet music covers. Publishers realized as early as 1830 that an appealing image would help to sell their musical scores. Such renowned artists as Winslow Homer and Toulouse Lautrec contributed original lithographs for this medium. Today, some of them sell for thousands of dollars at auction. Many other artists preferred anonymity, as is here the case. The worth of their works is in both its artistic and historic value, particularly in relation to the history of music and the dance.
This is a very early example of the lithographic image. In style and technique it appears to be French and is produced in the chalk manner, which was employed by the first generation of French lithographers. The image depicts a couple, in the traditional Hungarian costumes, dancing this early polka. Lithographs from this era are very scarce.
Size: 11 1/2 X 7 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Buy Now Price: $225.00 US
Condition: Printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins. A finely printed , some very faint foxing on the lower left margin. Otherwise, this original lithograph is in excellent condition throughout. Altogether, a beautiful example of the early sheet music lithograph
