Note: Hyacinthe Louis Victor Jean Baptiste Aubry-Lecomte 'Hyacinthe Aubry-Lecomte': 'Le prince des lithographes' actually began his career as an official in the Ministry of Finance and worked there from 1816 to 1823. At the same time he studied art techniques in the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson (1767-1824) and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Aubry-Lecomte initially exhibited his art in Paris in 1819. During the following years he both created and published his fine lithographs based upon the designs of Girodet-Trioson, Prud’hon, Gerard, Dejuinne, Vernet, Greuze and other French masters. Hyacinthe Aubry-Lecomte received the Legion d’Honneur in 1849.
What sets the lithographic art of Aubry-Lecomte apart from most other reproductive artists is his complete technical mastery of the medium. His 1824 masterpiece, Danae, after Girodet, simply ranks as one of the finest accomplishments in the history of lithography. Its tonal and tactile values and its graduations of light and shade are without parallel. And even in a less complex work, such as, Les Petits Fileurs, these remarkable elements are clearly present.
Today the lithographic art of Hyacinthe Aubre-Lecomte is included in such major collections as the Louvre, Paris, the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, the British Museum, London, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art includes an of "Les Petits Fileurs" under the title of “The Little Spinners” in its permanent collection, Accession Number: 60.620.96. And the Louvre, Paris, also contains an of this original lithograph in its permanent collection, Inventory # 19967 LR/Recto - Anciens numeros d'inventaire: 15391.
During the first half of the nineteenth century lithography in France vied with painting as the single most important source of artistic inspiration and expression. During both the neo classical and Romantic periods such great masters as Ingres, Delacroix and Gericault created some of their finest work in this medium. In this era reproductive lithographs – that is, lithographic interpretations of the paintings and drawings of other artists – were viewed as just as important as lithographs completely designed and created by a single artist. There was no greater master in this field than Hyacinthe Aubry-Lecomte, who was admired most particularly for his delicate and sensuous lithographs after the designs of both Prud’hon and Girodet. Such fine graphic art gave him the unofficial, lifetime title of "Le prince des lithographes".
Pierre Paul Prud'hon: A major French, neoclassical painter, Pierre Paul Prud'hon was the thirteenth child of a stone mason. After learning the fundamentals of art by himself the Bishop of Macon enrolled Prud'hon in the Academy of Dijon. In 1782 Prud'hon was awarded a prize to study art in Italy. There the art of both Leonardo and Correggio provided a lifelong inspiration for his work. Pierre Paul Prud'hon returned to France in 1789.
Prud'hon's initial years in Paris were full of hardship. He had married some years earlier a woman who suffered through periods of violence and alcoholism. That, in combination with a growing family, led him to take any sort of work, including designs for the lids of sweetmeat boxes.
His fortune changed when he created designs for the publisher, Didot. By 1800, Prud'hon had emerged as a leading painter and he received important commissions from the Louvre and the Palais de Justice. Pierre Prud'hon received the Legion of Honour in 1809 and was elected a member of the Institute in 1816. His famous art is both of his time and looks forward to the age of nineteenth century Romanticism.
As fine as Prud'hon's paintings are, it is his drawings which enter the realm of masterworks. His studies of the human form, in particular, are among the greatest in the history of art.
