Note: Richard Ansdell: One of Victorian England's most renowned animal painters, Richard Ansdell is also noteworthy as one of the early English artists responsible for the revival of etching as an important and original art form. Richard Ansdell was on of the first members of the "Etching Club" (1838 - 1885), which met on a fairly regular basis and published a large number of the members' original etchings. Besides Richard Ansdell, other prominent members included Creswick, Redgrave, Millais, Holman Hunt, Seymour Haden and Samuel Palmer. Richard Ansdell was also a full member of the Royal Academy.
Most of Richard Ansdell's etchings are quite small in size and characterized by his delicate handling of line and form. His most famous etchings include "The Stag", "Donkeys", and "The Park". Critics have often compared "The Park" to Samuel Palmer's famous etching entitled, "Sleeping Shepherd". It is certain both of these fine etchings contain the pastoral elements which was so vital to some of the best mid-nineteenth century art.
