Jacques Aliamet's "Vue des Environs de Saverne" belongs to a set of four plates portraying the landscapes of Saverne. This original engraving is the third view from the set and bears the full dedication and publisher's address along the lower margin. With its strongly constructed tonal values it is a fine example of Jacques Aliamet's great landscape art.

Note: Jacques Aliamet: A leading eighteenth century engraver of landscapes and sea-pieces, Jacques Aliamet studied printmaking techniques in Paris, under J. P. Le Bas. He was first employed by book publishers to engrave vignettes but then began a set of engravings after Joseph Vernet that secured for him both popularity and Royal patronage. In fact, from 1765 to 1774, Jacques Aliamet was one of several artists commissioned by the Emperor of China to engrave plates for the series, “Batailles de la Chine.” Aliamet also was granted the prestigious title of 'Graveur du Roi.'
  During his career Jacques Aliamet engraved plates after contemporary French painters and after the designs of Dutch old masters, such as, Berchem, Wouwerman, van de Velde and Teniers. His brother, Francois-Germain Aliamet (1734-1790), was also a leading engraver.

Condition: Printed upon thin China paper and impressed upon a thick sheet of laid paper and trimmed to the margins of the China paper as published in Paris by Jacques Aliamet around 1760. Signed and dedicated within the plate along the lower margin. Containing very faint foxing and rippling, else a finely printed, early and in good condition throughout. Vue des Environs de Saverne represents a prime example of the famous French eighteenth century landscape art of Jacques Aliamet.
