Gypsies on the Plain

Adolf Jelinek Alex's original etching and drypoint engraving, "Gypsies on the Plain" was created by the artist around 1930. In both his paintings and original prints, A. J. Alex frequently depicted Gypsies and their environment. One of the artist's largest etchings, "Gypsies on the Plain" is pencil signed by him in the lower right margin. It is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the Czechoslovakian artist, Adolf Jelinek Alex.

Note: Adolf Jelinek Alex: A Czech painter and etcher, Adolf Jelinek Alex studied art techniques at the Prazska (Prague) Akademie, under Professor Svabinskeho, and at the Munich Academy, under Professor Janka. A full member of the Gruppe Bildender Kunstler (Brunn), A. J. Alex exhibited his paintings and original prints in both Czechoslovakia and Germany during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
  As an etcher, Adolf Alex was best known for his equestrian scenes, architectural views and figurative depictions of gypsies such as this original etching and drypoint engraving. Today his fine art is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Prague, the British Museum, London, and the Albertina, Venice.

Condition: Printed upon smooth wove paper and with full margins as published around 1930. Signed by the artist in pencil within the lower margin. Containing remnants of glue staining in the upper and lower corners as well as foxing in the outer margins else a strong, tonal and in good condition throughout. Altogether, "Gypsies on the Plain" represents a prime, original example of the art of Adolf Jelinek Alex.
