Note: Grace Albee: The name of Grace Albee ranks among the finest American wood engravers of the twentieth century. She studied painting and drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design and concluded her education in Paris, under Paul Bornet. She remained in Paris for a number of years and exhibited there at both the Salon des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne. Grace Albee returned to America in the early 1930's and lived and worked in New York City. Much of her fine art during this decade chronicled the architecture of Manhattan. Finally in the early 1940's she moved to a rural community near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Most of Grace Albee's great wood engravings of botanical studies, stone houses and farming scenes were created there.
Grace Albee first experimented with wood engraving in 1928. During the following years her work in this medium gained her awards from such major institutions as the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Graphic Artists (1951), Boston Printmakers and Audubon Artists. She was also elected a full member of the National Academy in 1946. In 1999 the National Museum of Women in the Arts launched a major retrospective exhibition of Grace Albee's art.
Grace Albee's wood engravings are today found in such major collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, the Boston Public Library, Carnegie Institute, Cleveland Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden, and the National Museum of Israel.
Amaryllis was commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York and published by them in 1978 in a sole, limited edition of 250 signed s. Since its creation in the mid 1930's, the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, Grace Albee and others. During the 1960's and 1970's contributing artists included such masters as Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, Lawrence Beall Smith and Grace Albee.
