Eishi Gyokusai

A Kabuki Actor

Eishi Gyokusai's original woodcut, "A Kabuki Actor" is printed upon 19th century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published in Osaka around 1840. It is both a scarce and beautiful example of Eishi Gyokusai's work and Osaka woodcut art.

Title: A Kabuki Actor
Artist: Gyokusai, Eishi (Osaka, active, 1830 - 1860)
Date: c. 1840
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Note: Next to the capital of Edo (Tokyo) the city of Osaka was the most active producer of original graphic art during the first half of the nineteenth century. At this time Osaka was an important commercial and banking center and its inhabitants could afford and expected high standards of craftsmanship. Their principal pleasure was the theatre and thus the vast majority of Osaka woodcuts portray prominent Kabuki actors.
Osaka woodcuts first appeared in the late eighteenth century. Its finest artists created woodcuts from the first decade of the nineteenth century until about 1860, when print production gradually declined.
Unlike Edo artists, Osaka printmakers rarely devoted themselves full time to woodcuts. Their output was generally quite small. Furthermore most provide a nightmare for scholarly research as it was their custom to often change names every three or four years. Eishi Gyokusai was particularly active during the 1830's and 1840's, but he may have been designing woodcuts both before and after these dates under another name.
Size: Oban (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on Japanese mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published in Osaka around 1840. Bearing all the fine lines and tones of a very early impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original woodcut represents both a scarce and beautiful example of Eishi Gyokusai's work and Osaka woodcut art.
