Charles Dana Gibson: Arguably the most successful and well known artist of the Belle Epoch era (1890-1900), the lithographs and illustrations of Charles Dana Gibson commanded a world wide following. Gibson received his training from the Art Students League of New York and under the architect, George Post. He established himself as America's foremost illustrator by the age of twenty and went on to write and illustrate such well known books as, Education of Mr. Pipp, Sketches in London, The Social Ladder, A Widow and The Americans. Charles Gibson's gift for gentle satire, particularly among the social elite, was tremendously influential. Not the least, his representations of liberated beautiful young women created the dominant fashion of the time. The term, 'Gibson Girl' is still with us to this day.
Charles Dana Gibson was a full member of the prestigious National Academy of Design, as well as the Society of Illustrators, the American Federation of Artists, the Artists Guild of Authors and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In the twentieth century he illustrated for many national magazines and became the general editor for Life. The Library of Congress, Washington, DC., owns the most comprehensive collection of Gibson's original drawings and lithographs.
