Knud Eel

Stranded

Knud Eel's original etching and aquatint engraving, "Stranded" was published in Denmark in 1938. This impression is printed upon fine archival paper with the 'Van Gelder Zonen' watermark and with full, deckled margins. It is signed in the plate and also signed and dated in pencil by Knud Peter Larsen Eel along the lower margin. The etching depicts a storm at sea where a fishing vessel has run aground and Villagers attempt the rescue. Stranded is a superb, original example of the art created by the Danish artist, Knud Eel.

Note: Knud Peter Larsen Eel 'Knud Eel': A leading twentieth century Danish painter and printmaker, Knud Peter Larsen Eel began his formal art education at the Academy in Copenhagen in 1931. Concentrating mainly upon landscapes and marines, Knud Eel's art was exhibited at museums in Lemvig, Biborg, Herning, Copenhagen, Goteborg, Malmo, Oslo and elsewhere during his career. In 1962, the Kusthallen, Copenhagen, launched a major retrospective exhibition of the art of Knud Eel. Today, Knud Eel's paintings and etchings are included in most major Danish public collections and at the Finnish National Gallery, The Athenaeum.
  Stranded is a large and impressive example of the etched art of Knud Eel. Using layers of both black and gray aquatint to create strong tonal values the etching depicts a storm at sea (probably off the coast of Jutland) where a fishing vessel has run aground. On the shore villagers have managed to pass a lifeline to the boat and the perilous rescue attempt is underway.
