Hildegard Woodward, A major American artist book illustrator, created this original watercolor entitled, "Don't let the fleas bite you" around 1960. It is painted upon thick, wove paper and with full margins. "Don't let the fleas bite you" is signed in pencil by Hildegard Woodward to the lower right and containing two titles in both the upper and lower margins. This watercolor illustrates a story dealing with a pleasure cruise to Mexico aboard a ship named the S. S. Yucatan. It is a fine, original example of Hildegard Woodward's humorous art.

Note: Hildegard Woodward: A major American artist of the illustrated book, Hildegard Woodward first studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and then completed her education in Paris, France. Upon her return to America she was introduced to the book arts by the Boston illustrator, Marguerite Davis. Hildegard Woodward completed her first illustrated children's book in 1931, Alice Dagliesh's, The Blue Teapot: Sandy Cove Stories.
  Several years later Hildegard Woodward moved to New York City and was in constant demand for her illustrations from publishers there. She illustrated many more books by authors such as Elizabeth Coatsworth, Alice Dagliesh and Julia Bristol Bischoff. Hildegard Woodward also received Caldecott Honor Book Citations for Roger and the Fox (1947) and The Wild Birthday Cake (1949), both written by Lavinia Riker Davis. Finally, Hildegard Woodward both authored and illustrated several books, the most notable being, Time Was (1941) and The House on Grandfather's Hill (1961).
  Hildegard Woodward's art was not restricted to children's books. She illustrated a large number of works of adult humour and fiction. Today extensive collections of both her art and correspondence are located at the University of Southern Mississippi and at the Children's Literature Research Collection, University of Minnesota.
  The exact source for Don't let the fleas bite you! is at present unknown. Obviously it illustrates a story dealing with a pleasure cruise to Mexico aboard a ship named the S. S. Yucatan. The occupants of the ship are anything but satisfied with the service or lack of service they have received and have surrounded a young officer with their grievances. This original watercolour is a striking example of Hildegard Woodward's humorous art.
