Jose Varona

Jose Varona - Ballet

Ballet

Jose Varona's original watercolor, gouache and crayon drawing, "Ballet" was created by the twentieth century Argentinean / American artist in 1967. This work of art is drawn upon thick, wove paper and with full margins. It is signed, dated and titled by the artist in green crayon along the lower margin. The scene depicts a couple dressed in 16th or 17th century costumes. "Ballet" is a fine, original example of the costume designs created for the theater by Jose Varona.

Title: Ballet
Artist: Varona, Jose (Argentina, 1930 - Resides, United States)
Date: 1967
Medium: Original Watercolor, Gouache and Crayon
Note: Jose Varona: One of the most distinguished costume and set designers for both ballet and opera, Jose Varona began his artistic career in 1953 in his native Argentina. Since that time he has created costumes for such famous dancers and singers as Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Beverly Sills and Joan Sutherland and collaborated upon set designs with the legendary choreographer, George Balanchine (1904-1983). Among his set design work for Balanchine is the 1954 New York City Ballet production of 'The Nutcracker'.
During his career Jose Varona has been commissioned by such institutions as the Paris Opera, the Australian Opera, Syndey, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, the San Francisco Ballet and numerous others. In 2003 the artist received the prestigious TDF Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 1967 (the year this drawing is dated) Varona designed the costumes for both the New York City Opera production of 'Julius Caesar' and The Public Theatre, New York, production of Ben Jonson's play, 'Volpone'. Yet, as this original drawing is entitled, 'Ballet', it's doubtful that it was created for either the above mentioned opera or play. Judging by the costumes depicted it is likely the drawing was created for a ballet were the setting is in the 16th or 17th centuries.
