Vivian Torrence - Legend

Legend

Vivian Torrence's original lithograph, "Legend" is printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full, deckled margins as published in the limited edition of three hundred impressions in 1985. It is signed, dated, titled and numbered by her in pencil along the lower margin. The relationship between science and art has always played a key role in Torrence's work, as can be seen here in "Legend", both scientific and artistic methods explaining our world are primary elements. This is a fine, original example of the contemporary art created by the American artist, Vivian Torrence.

Title: Legend
Artist: Torrence, Vivian (Born, Chicago Heights, Illinois)
Date: 1985
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Vivian Torrence: A contemporary printmaker and collage artist, Vivian Torrence received her BS in Ed. from Eastern Illinois University (1967) and her Master of Fine Arts in painting from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa (1978). Her first solo exhibition took place in 1983 and since that time her art has been the subject of exhibitions at Purdue University, the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC, the University of Pennsylvania, Deutsches Museum, Munich and Amerika Haus, Munich. Torrence has also taught and lectured at such institutions as Iowa State University, University of California, Cornell University and the University of Florida.
  The relationship between science and art has always played a key role in Vivian Torrence's work. In this light, her most famous endeavor was the 1993 exhibition and book (published by the Smithsonian Press) entitled, Chemistry Imagined. This was actually a collaboration between the Nobel laureate chemist, Roald Hoffmann, and the collage art of Vivian Torrence. Again, in an earlier work of art, Legend, both scientific and artistic methods of explaining our world are primary elements.

In reference to this original work of art, Vivan Torrence writes;

"The lithograph, "Legend" was commissioned by the University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City, IA for their Patron Print program, 1985. It was drawn on the litho stone at Richard Finch's studio in Illinois"

My work is conceived using a collage method, finding and piecing images from diverse sources and bringing them together formally in a new meaning. In this case, the work has much to do with the university and the search for knowledge. Looking for the 'Map' in all fields and making a legend that we can all refer to as we go throulgh our life's experiences." * Vivian Torrence

  Today the artist's prints and collages are included in such major institutions as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC, the Art Institute of Chicago, Des Moines Art Center, Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Missouri and Purdue University Galleries Collection, Lafayette, Indiana and others.
